What are some of your highest thoughts on the greatness of God? Try to stretch those thoughts further, what is your picture of God? Well, the good news is that no matter how lofty your thoughts, they will fall short of the greatness of God. It may seem a little strange to call that good news, but it means that God is always better than we can even imagine. This cool thought is the topic of our next new song “Immeasurably More” by Rend Collective.
The main them of the song is to remind us of different ways God is more than we imagine. The first verse builds on ideas from Ephesians 3:20 NIV, pointing out how God is always greater than anything we can “ask”, “seek”, “dream”, “know”, “pray”, or even “say.” The second verse turns to the gospel, reminding us how Jesus is greater than our sin and how He conquered death, while the chorus drives home the point that He is “more than we can imagine.”
The climax of the song comes in the bridge, which draws our hearts and minds to imagine something we only get a glimpse of in this life. The lyrics are based on 1 Corinthians 2:9 and build anticipation for what eternity holds “for those who love him.” It ends with a phrase which sums up why eternity will be so great. The phase is “You are coming,” pointing out that we will be with Him, our God who is far greater than anything we can imagine and who loves us with never-ending love.
There is more I could write about the bridge, but I think it would be more helpful to give you an exercise we did at worship practice last week. The exercise is to pick what you are most looking forward to in eternity, “never-ending joy” or “never-failing love,” and think of the reason for why you chose that phrase. Don’t worry, there is no wrong answer, but one of those phrases probably had a stronger initial appeal. If you want to receive maximum benefit of the exercise, you may want to do the exercise with one or more friends and share your answers. Last week in practice we shared our answers in groups of 3-4 people, and it was really encouraging to hear all the answers.
Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed doing the exercise and found your thoughts being lifted higher as you considered what this song, “Immeasurably More,” is all about. It is a song meant to be sung together, declaring to God, one another, and ourselves that God is better than we could ever imagine.
