One of the things I love about Jesus is the way He answered peoples questions. Many times he wouldn’t give a direct answer but would either ask a question or make a statement that would help lead someone to the answer. I think this is a brilliant way to teach; though it can be frustrating when you are the one asking the question. It encourages someone to learn how to answer their own questions and helps them understand the key factors that go into answering their particular question. Jesus gave one of these indirect answers when John the Baptist sent people to ask whether Jesus was the Messiah. Instead of saying, “yes,” He told them to tell John what they saw and heard, the blind seeing, dead rising, etc (Matt 11:4-6). Similarly to this response by Jesus, our next new song, “Jesus Only Jesus,” uses questions to guide us in understanding who Jesus is and some of the questions are based on this passage in Matthew.
One of the key themes that is communicated in the song is that Jesus stands alone, there is no one like Him. The verses all follow the pattern of using two questions which point out that only Jesus can do certain things followed by a declaration about Jesus. The chorus and bridge reinforce that Jesus stands alone using themes from Philippians 2:9-11 where it says, “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Overall, the lyrics are pretty straight forward to this great song, building to the theme of the song, “You stand alone, I stand amazed – Jesus, only Jesus.”
