Mankind has a few characteristics that are nearly true for everyone. Some traits are good and others bad, but one of those qualities is the desire to belong. When you look at colleges and even high schools there is an endless number of clubs, sports teams, and programs. We’ll sometimes go to great lengths to fit in with others, and the consequences can be good and bad. We all have this longing to fit in with a bigger group.
We believe God gave us this desire. We believe we were wired to be a part of something bigger and to fit in with others, and we believe this is part of our spiritual DNA. What’s more, we believe that the Bible agrees. Skeptical?
In the very first book of the Bible, the second chapter no less, God sees Adam alone and declares that it is not good for man to be alone; and he gives Adam, his wife, Eve (Genesis 2:18-25). In the Psalms, there are numerous songs of praise exhorting God’s people to “…praise Him in the assembly…” (Psalm 107:32). When God’s people are exiled to a land where they don’t belong, they sing, “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” (Psalm 137:4).
This desire to belong isn’t just a trend in the Old Testament, but it’s a trend in the New Testament as well. Jesus asks the Father that we might be included in Jesus’ and the Father’s relationship (John 17:21). Let that sink in for a moment. Jesus is asking that we might belong to the family of God; that we would belong to Jesus’ own family. What’s more, Jesus even tells us that when two or more meet in His name that He will be there (Matthew 18:20). At the end of the Bible, God’s people are referred to as Jesus’ bride (Revelation 21). The beginning and end of the Bible both have a wedding, and weddings are about two parties belonging to one another.
We believe that this God-given desire to belong is true for us, today. That we are made to experience this belonging to one another in this life, and we believe a big part of belonging to God’s people is the local church. Here at Christian Fellowship, we believe a church should be like an extended family, and we want others to be a part of our family.
What does belonging to a church family look like?
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be posting videos on this page, YouTube, and Facebook in a short web series called Belong. Each video will feature different aspects about what it looks like to belong here at Christian Fellowship. Some may be more about helping others belong, and others may focus on what it can look like to feel like you belong. We hope they encourage you to know that you can belong in God’s family, and we’d love to have you be a part of our family here at CF.
